Many people have been through very painful or traumatic experiences, and are haunted by the memories for the rest of their lives. Until recently, there was no way to “heal” the memory so you could get on with living your life without being affected by the incident.
Perhaps you have been attacked or raped, abused as a child, or in a relationship with a violent partner. You may have been through a “disaster”, such as a bushfire, flood or car accident. You may have been traumatised through your work – in the army, police force, fire brigade or ambulance. After going through a very painful or traumatic experience, you may have flashbacks, nightmares or panic attacks. You may feel very angry or be constantly anxious and worried that something bad may happen to you. To help you deal with these overpowering emotions, you may have turned to using medications, drugs, alcohol, junk food or gambling to numb the pain. You may have isolated yourself from others and want to be left alone. Perhaps you have tried counselling before but it didn’t really help.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a new treatment that is extremely powerful in helping you to “heal” a memory. After EFT has been used on a painful event, you are able to remember the event without feeling any of the upsetting emotions that you used to feel. You are able to feel calm and relaxed when you think about or talk about the event. You can use EFT on each upsetting event. After the emotions have been released, you usually find that the other symptoms improve as well- the flashbacks, nightmares, anger and anxiety. You may feel less need to use alcohol, drugs or overeat. You have a great chance of returning to a “normal” life.

OVERCOMING TRAUMA FOR WAR VETERANS
Bernadette is a member of EFT Australian Practitioners, a professional organisation which aims to promote the use of EFT. There is a sub-committee that specialises in helping war veterans and their families to overcome the effects of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This sub-committee is also working towards getting EFT accepted as a valid treatment for PTSD.
